For the price of the tool, you get customized checks for different document types, a plagiarism filter, and a function to help diversify your vocabulary, among other extras. Grammarly also offers a limited free version that checks for critical spelling and grammar errors. Grammarly’s Business tier costs $15 per member per month and is billed on an annual basis.

Safety and Use

Grammarly checks your writing against its database of content and style errors as well as anonymously collected data from its daily active users. The downside of this real-time model is that Grammarly requires an internet connection to work. In use, Grammarly underlines critical mistakes in red (spelling and basic grammar), and advanced errors in other colors (style and best practices), though the latter capability is limited to premium users. Hovering over any of the indicated words or phrases brings up the option to fix the error directly or provides a more detailed explanation of the mistake.

Grammarly is useful in Emails, and Messages; Documents and Projects; as well as Social Media. We appreciate the clear language and use of sample sentences to illustrate mistakes. It’s more detailed than what you get with the built-in grammar checkers in both Google Docs and Office 365, though the latter is improving quickly. We also find the error count that Grammarly adds at the bottom of every document to be an efficient way of showing how much editing work is left.

Security Limitations

You should know about the likely protection and security dangers of any product that checks what you type. For example, in 2018 a Google security specialist announced a weakness with how the Grammarly program augmentations handle authentication tokens. Grammarly settled the issue soon after this announcement and noticed that the weakness simply could uncover information saved in the Grammarly Editor.

Even though Grammarly took care of the reaction well, you should practice caution with programming that can view and adjust your information. All things considered, Grammarly differs from a keylogger in a couple of significant ways. For example, Grammarly requires your authorization to retrieve what you are writing and outwardly demonstrates when it is working. Grammarly is hindered from reaching into anything you type in text fields stamped “delicate”, for example, Sensitive document information or secret phrase fields. We suggest you disable Grammarly for such usage on the off chance that they are not captured accurately, just like any sensitive records.

Compatibility & Functionality

We installed the Grammarly desktop app on the Windows 10 machine and had no issues signing into any of our accounts. The app looks great, and the layout is highly functional; we particularly like the side panel’s dark accents and minimalist icons. Users can choose between writing text directly in an editor or importing an existing document.

If you just copy and paste text from a Word document into the Grammarly app, Grammarly will only retains bold and italic formatting, lists, links, and headers. In testing, we found that it also kept underlined text. If you want to keep the full formatting of the text (including paragraph spacing), use the import tool to add the document. You won’t see any formatted text while you work in the Grammarly editor, but the document retains all of the original formatting whenever you export it.

Since the editor now thankfully includes formatting tools such as bold, italics, underlines, headings, links, and lists (both numbered and bulleted), you could just write directly in the Grammarly app. However, it’s likely easier to keep writing in Word or Google Docs and use the dedicated Grammarly tools for those platforms.Inside the work area application, click on the Profile symbol to make alters to your word reference and switch your writing language among a few variations of English: American, Australian, British, and Canadian. Grammarly isn’t presently accessible in other languages aside from English, so it is not an enhancement language-learning program —except if you are attempting to maybe learn English.

Inside an archive, the right side of the window houses tabs for spelling and punctuation mistakes, premium writing checks, a counterfeiting checker, a human editor alternative, and a general writing score dependent on these elements. As referenced before, the writing score is useful for getting a fast check of your writing progress and how much updating you have left.

Two different highlights accessible are Goals and Performance. Goals dispatches at whatever point you import another report; it assists Grammarly with changing its alters depending on the setting of your content. For instance, you can determine your purpose (Creative, Narrative, Persuasive, Storytelling), crowd, style, and feeling. Premium clients can pick between these, including Academic, Business, and Creative. The Performance popup shows you general information, for example, word tally and understanding time, notwithstanding jargon and clarity measurements. These measurements are determined on examination with other Grammarly users, and the Readability score depends on the Flesch ease-test. The two augmentations make Grammarly more valuable at a more significant level than that of a basic checker.
